Francisco de Paula Cândido Xavier is the full name of the most famous and popular medium Brazil has ever known. Chico Xavier was born in the city of Pedro Leopoldo, in Minas Gerais, on April 2, 1910.
He was the son of a worker called; João Cândido Xavier and the maid Maria João de Deus. Chico lost his mother when he was just 5 years old and was handed over by his father to be raised by his godparents.
Chico had a difficult childhood. During this period, he was beaten three times a day by his godmother, with a quince stick. After his biological father married Cidália Batista, Chico returned to live with his father, brothers and second mother.
Despite having been raised in a Catholic family, Chico showed signs of a special gift for establishing contact with spirits already during childhood. For a long time as a child, Chico Xavier communicated with his deceased mother.
Life and Work of Chico Xavier
Chico started working at the age of 8 and always looked for his own livelihood. He retired as a typist under the Ministry of Agriculture.
At the age of 17, he began studying spiritualism and founded the Centro Espírita Luiz Gonzaga. In his life as a medium, Chico Xavier got rid of all the gifts he received from the people he helped. Furthermore, the money raised from the sale of the 412 books he wrote was entirely donated to spiritist federations and charitable institutions.
Chico Xavier preached citizenship and love for others. The Brazilian medium became known internationally for his work.
When moving to Uberaba, Chico Xavier transformed the city into a hub for attracting visitors. The medium died on June 30, 2002, at the age of 92, victim of a cardiac arrest.
